“But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake, for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake — for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning — lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: stay awake.” –Mark 13:32-37
TRANSCRIPTION:
Good morning. Grace and peace be unto all of you, my Father’s children.
It is Tuesday of Holy Week, and we are moving toward the apex — the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ that stand at the center of everything we believe.
Yesterday we sat with Jesus in the temple, witnessing the righteous indignation that drove out those who had turned a house of prayer into a place of exploitation. Today we follow Him to Bethany, where He returns after that confrontation and begins a series of intimate conversations with His disciples. These are the words of a man preparing to leave.
There are things He needs to impart, truths He needs to press into them before He goes. And one of the most urgent is this: stay awake.
We turn to Mark, the 13th chapter, verses 32 through 37.
No one knows the day or the hour. Not the angels. Not even the Son — only the Father. And so the instruction is not to calculate or speculate, but to be ready. Always ready. Operating with the kind of urgency that comes from understanding that tomorrow is not guaranteed and His return is not announced in advance.
So many of us move through life with a quiet assumption that we have time. Time to do what God is calling us to do. Time to have that conversation, make that change, seek that forgiveness, take that step. I’ll get to it tomorrow. I’ll handle it next week. And Christ is pressing us here — directly, plainly — that no one has been promised that window.
I think about what it was like growing up when my parents would leave the house and assign chores before they went. I never knew exactly when they would be back. But nothing focused my attention quite like hearing that garage door begin to open — and realizing there was still something left undone.
That feeling of being caught unprepared is something none of us want to experience when the Master returns.
This is not a word meant to produce fear. It is a word meant to produce urgency — the healthy, purposeful urgency of someone who takes seriously both the calling on their life and the reality that time is not infinite. If there is atonement to seek, seek it now. If there is repentance to offer, offer it now. If God is tugging at your heart to do something, say something, go somewhere, or reach someone — do it now. Do not tarry. Do not delay.
No one knows the day, the hour, or the time. Not even the angels in heaven. Only the Father.
So let us move today with purpose, with understanding, and with a sense of urgency that reflects how much we value what we have been given and how seriously we take the One who gave it.
God bless you. Have an incredible morning.
