“There are many who say, ‘Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!’ You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” –Psalm 4:6-8

TRANSCRIPTION:

Good morning, and God bless you on this incredible Friday.

We are closing out the week — and what a week it has been. Our theme has been peace of mind, and I will speak personally: this week brought no shortage of challenges. Each day has been an exercise in finding a way to take in all that is happening around us and still remain in a place of peace.

Not peace as in the absence of conflict — but peace as in the intentional act of blocking out the noise so that we can focus on God’s call, God’s mission, and God’s commission for our lives, even in a season when so much is unfolding before our eyes.

To close out this week, we return to the book of Psalms — the 4th Psalm, verses 6 through 8.

This psalm is written by David, addressed to the choir master, with stringed instruments. The book of Psalms is, in many ways, a hymnal — and this particular hymn speaks to the very heart of what it means to bring a request before the Lord and experience the sweetness of God’s assurance within that request.

“There are many who say, who will show us some good?” How many of us are asking that very question right now? When does this end? How does it end? Who will take care of me?

And the answer David gives is quiet, but profound: “In peace I will both lie down and sleep — for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

Notice the distinction he makes. He does not say he simply lay down. He says he slept. There is a difference. Have you ever gone to bed but couldn’t sleep? You closed your eyes, but your mind was still racing — the noise had followed you into the night. David is declaring something deeper: I am not just resting my body. I am at rest in my spirit. Even if there are figurative bombs going off overhead, I can find sleep — because I have placed myself in the only place where true safety exists: the bosom of God.

My life, my circumstances, my concerns, my weightiness — I place it all in His hands. Because He is the only one who can provide that kind of safety. There is no other source. And because of the faithfulness of His Word, that is how I have peace of mind.

It may not look safe outside. But I am sure there is safety as I dwell within His presence. And so I don’t just lie down — I go ahead and sleep. I am able to get rest. I am able to overcome restlessness, anxiety, and worry.

As we close this week, I want to encourage you to let that be true for your life as well. Do not let your concern and worry cause you to lose sleep. Your rest matters — and that rest is found in the only place where your safety truly lives. In Him, cast all your cares.

Be incredible this Friday. And most of all — remain at peace.
